Facilities
No other college has the range of facilities that Arana has to offer. Our unique range of buildings, from historic to contemporary, from mansion to cottage, from formal room to common room shows our diversity extends not just from the way we do things, but also to our facilities. However Arana is not just about buildings and facilities, its the people inside them that matter most!
Buildings and Rooms
We have eighteen houses at Arana, mainly for undergraduate residents.
Our multi-story buildings are Colombo and Bates Wings, Leithview, Turner and Rawiri which are all centrally heated.
Houses are electrically heated. It can be cold in Dunedin so bring warm clothes! Rooms are generally equipped with bed, study desk, work chair, easy chair, built-in wardrobe and study lamp.
All bedding is supplied, and our laundry service allows you to exchange your used sheets and pillow cases for clean ones on a weekly basis. All rooms can be fitted with telephone and the Internet. All bedrooms are cleaned weekly. Our residents usually personalise their bedrooms with posters and decorations.
Our residential village offers an excellent variety of rooms and self-contained apartments to suit the needs of the diverse range of students who seek accommodation in Dunedin. Houses and apartments are very much part of the Arana scene.
Academic
Our academic facilities help drive our impressive results. At Arana you'll find four tutorial rooms used for both organised tutorials lead by experienced tutors and also as quiet study areas. We feel providing such a warm and comfortable room, employing only top-quality tutors and running our tutorials in a relaxed style are the main reasons we enjoy such high attendance rates and the commensurate high levels of academic achievement of our residents. We also have an Archive Room and a Music Room featuring a drum kit as well as a pianos.
Our well equipped computer rooms feature close to 50 PC's and are available 24/7 and feature top of the line equipment including Quad and Dual core computers, big screen LCD's and high speed laser printing and photocopying. We also have some modern Apple iMac's for those requiring access to specialist software. All computers at Arana are connected directly to the University network, so what you access during lectures, you can access at Arana.
Many rooms at Arana can also be connected to the University network, allowing you to connect your PC or laptop to access your files and the internet. Our rooms can also have phone lines installed, just enquire when you arrive.
Social
We have a large main common room with a big screen TV, Sky Digital, surround sound system and a pool table. The main common room also has an adjoining deck accesses via large byfold doors, perfect to enjoy the Dunedin sunshine!
There is a state of the art movie room featuring a high definition projector, full surround sound system, digital televison, full access to our DVD collection and even a HD-DVD and Blu Ray player! The movie room can also double as a Boardroom.
Each house or floor has its own lounge or common room with fridge, television and kitchenette. All residents have access to our impressive collection of close to 300 DVD's, as well as DVD players, Xbox's, Xbox 360's, PlayStation2's, Wii as well as games including Halo3 and Singstar!
In the ground floor of Rawiri building there is a small gym with up to date equipment. There are two music rooms and a ping pong room as well as four tutorial rooms. In our formal room you can also enjoy a quiet game of chess.
The Warden has an impressive "dress up" collection which is available to residents and staff.
Conferences at Arana
Arana can host all sorts of functions and activities during the summer break when the residents are not here. Arana can manage large conference groups or smaller groups and even a family who might want a house for the summer.
Arana is currently managing staff training workshops, end of year functions and meetings. Arana has managed a wedding breakfast, a function following a Christening and a variety of school and professional groups. We recently hosted a weeklong training exercise for 160 people and this involved specialist vehicles, specialist storage and even a place for 8 large dogs. We have had a large movie cast staying here as well.
